So usually when I see stuff on the First Doctor, it’s in the context of all the other Doctors, or he gets simplified down to a few memorable traits—the crotchety old man, the dear old grandfather, “You can’t rewrite history! Not one line!” and “Someday…I shall come back. Yes…I shall come back.” Which is all well and good! And I totally get why lots of fans haven’t seen many of his serials. It’s okay! I’m not here to fan-shame. Instead, I want to share my love of him, and some of my own interpretations of him. These aren’t the only ways he could be interpreted. But for those looking for tips on characterizing him without watching every serial like I did, it may be helpful! It’s only one fan’s perspective, of course, and I make no claims that this was the writers’ intent, or Hartnell’s intent—only my reading of the final product in the larger context of the show’s history.
